What should move us to action is human dignity: the inalienable dignity of the oppressed, but also the dignity of each of us. We lose dignity if we tolerate the intolerable.

One of my favorite comedians is Demetri Martin. He was on tour in Texas; particularly, not in Austin where I was living at the time. I deeply regretted missing his San Antonio show an hour away. Thankfully, I had a second chance for redemption. I could see him the following evening in Houston, a mere two and a half hours away. Not as ideal but my nearly non-existent FOMO plus love for driving plus longing for Houston’s Asian food plus heart for contemporary art fueled a much less resistant ticket purchase. Nine hours later, I was on the road to Houston alone. And being alone was quite possibly the best way to experience the art of The Menil Collection, a long pit stop prior to attending the comedy show. The Menil is free to the public, which is how art of this caliber should be. I hope these photos convey the peace felt within the different spaces on the property, which includes Rothko’s Chapel and a building dedicated to a Dan Flavin and another to Cy Twombly’s works among other buildings. It is relaxing and inspiring and grounding. Quite a juxtaposition from comedic tension. Perhaps a perfect one for a fulfilling, spontaneous, solo trip.
